Why Business Leaders Train Like High-Performance Athletes

Most successful business leaders that I have worked with are fascinated with elite sports. They know how important it is to take care of their physical wellness, and most importantly their mental strength.

Elite sports is a powerful metaphor for business and there are some striking parallels:

  • winning;
  • losing;
  • strong competition;
  • achieving goals and targets;
  • hard work and teamwork;
  • dealing with successes and failures;
  • perseverance and determination;
  • and recovering from setbacks.

Recovery is one of the most critical parts of being a successful leader. For the body, and for the mind.

The mind needs to rest to rebuild new strengths and develop resilience, similar to the muscles of an athlete between workouts.

As an Olympic, NHL, And Executive Performance Consultant I have been successfully using my award-winning Performance Intelligence Protocol and applying the lessons I've learned from world-class athletes with business leaders for over 15 years.

So what elite sports skills do you need to become a Corporate Athlete?

What will help you achieve the same intense focus and desire to succeed?

What will help you to develop the quiet confidence to hit peak performance while dealing with constant change and stress?

Tip #1: Work to actively develop your mental toughness and self-belief - being able to thrive under extreme pressure is possibly the most defining characteristic of any of the elite athletes that I have worked with.

Tip #2: Know that your long-term success requires not only a great physical ability but an extraordinary mindset too - athletes with the most positive and resilient mindsets have the drive and ability to constantly reinvent themselves so that they can stay ahead of the competition.

Tip #3: Take time out to celebrate your victories, however small they may be - you need to keep reminding yourself why all of your hard work and commitment is worthwhile.

There are, of course, many differences between elite sports and business, one being that a top-level athlete’s career may only last for several years, while an executive’s career may last for a lifetime. However, you can't ignore the powerful striking parallels - they will help drive you and your organization to the greatest of achievements and success.

Isn’t it time you took action?
