Most players already have a head coach.
What they don’t have is a useful one inside their own head.

The internal voice tends to specialise in commentary.
Play-by-play analysis.
Occasional criticism delivered with great confidence and very little timing.

A real head coach does not shout mid-shift.
They don’t relive the last mistake while the puck is live.
And they don’t run a full post-mortem before the next faceoff.

Yet this is exactly how many players try to coach themselves.

Being your own head coach is not about motivation.
It’s about decision-making authority.

A good head coach:

  • decides what matters now
  • shortens feedback loops
  • gives instructions that can actually be followed under pressure

Which means the job of your inner coach is remarkably dull.

It says things like:
Next shift: simple.
Eyes up.
One job.

It does not debate your future, your confidence, or your worth as a human.

The players who become reliable under pressure aren’t louder with themselves.
They’re clearer.

They’ve trained their internal coach to speak less, say better things, and then get out of the way.

Being your own head coach doesn’t start when you make it.
It starts the moment you realise the voice in your head works for you — not the other way around.

And like any good coach, it improves with training.

Quietly.
On purpose.

Stay Sharp and Skate like the wind, Izzy
