There are few phrases in hockey more powerful than:

"Scouts are here." Three words.

Suddenly, the hands get tighter. The feet get heavier. The game gets smaller.

The funny thing is that the scout hasn't even spoken to you.

Nothing has changed about your skill. Nothing has changed about your preparation. Nothing has changed about the thousands of hours you've already invested.

The only thing that changed was where your attention went.

Elite players don't perform well because they somehow don't care who's watching. They perform well because they know how to bring their attention back to what matters.

The next shift. The next pass. The next puck battle. The next decision.

Because scouts aren't looking for perfection.

They're looking for players who can still play their game when everyone else is busy thinking about being watched.

The player who can stay present under pressure has already separated themselves from the crowd.

The scout arrives and half the rink starts performing for the scout.

The players who get noticed are usually the ones still playing hockey.
