One of the quiet and most powerful lessons of being involved in Olympic hockey has nothing to do with speed, strength, or effort.
It's this:
The more individual talent on the ice, the more discipline is required.
At the highest level, greatness doesn't announce itself. It disappears into structure.
Olympic teams are stacked with elite players — captains, scorers, franchise names. Yet the game doesn't reward assertion.
The players who dominate aren't trying to prove anything. They integrate so completely into the system that attention drops away.
No self-monitoring. No internal commentary. Just read → respond → move.
That's not suppressing talent.
That's talent unblocked
Why this matters
Under pressure, "asserting yourself" usually means:
All three pull attention inward — and performance slows.
Flow isn't created by effort.
It's created by trust.
When a player trusts the system, friction disappears. Training runs. Decisions sharpen. Timing returns.
Off the ice
You see this same shift when NHLers, leaders, surgeons, and high performers learn how to stop performing themselves and start trusting what they've already built.
This is the level where my clients do their most important work — not adding more, but getting out of their own way when it matters most.
It's a good reminder for me too.
Stay Sharp and Skate like the wind, Izzy
