Intention is very popular.

It sounds purposeful. It feels grown-up. It suggests you’re heading somewhere meaningful, even if you’re still in your tracksuit.
Action, meanwhile, is less glamorous. It involves doing the thing. Repeatedly. Often without applause.
In hockey, intention alone is harmless but ineffective. “I intend to be more confident.” “I intend to stay calm.” “I intend not to overthink.”
All perfectly reasonable. None of them move the puck.
Results appear when intention is paired with specific, repeatable action.
The best players don’t just want to be composed. They know exactly what they do when the game speeds up:
- how they breathe
- where their eyes go
- what their one job is on that shift
That’s intention made operational.
Action without intention isn’t much better. That’s just movement. Effort. Activity that looks busy but goes nowhere.
Elite performance sits in the overlap: Clear intention. Simple action. Repeated under pressure.
This is why confidence grows quietly in good systems. The brain stops guessing. The body stops bracing. Decisions get cleaner because they’re familiar.
You don’t get results by wanting them. You get them by aligning what you mean to do with what you actually do — shift after shift.
No drama. No speeches. Just intention, backed up by action, long enough for results to become inevitable.
